For those of you who don’t know the Van Hunks tale, here is a quick recap: it’s about a retired pirate who lived on Devil’s Peak and had a smoking contest with the Devil, who eventually wins the contest. Legend has it that the cloud of tobacco smoke they left became the “table-cloth” that often spills over Table Mountain when the south-easter blows. Van Hunks is a favourite among Capetonians. The food is good, they have regular specials, and the party is always good, probably the devil trying to win the game again. Situated on Kloof Street, this restaurant and bar has definite bragging rights when it gets to spectacular mountain and street views. It’s lovely in summer, cosy in winter.
