Downtown Ithaca

In Ithaca, Downtown really is down town. Nestled at the bottom of 50 mile long Cayuga Lake and surrounded on three sides by hills, the city center looks up to Cornell University and Ithaca College and the older suburbs. There was a long-sustained rumor that the Little Rascals filmed their boxcar hill run on one of the tree-lined streets that heads straight into town, and when you visit you'll see why that was a hairy ride.

Spend any time in Ithaca and you can't help but notice there is a lot of art on the walls. Murals keep the natives sane during the endless gray days of winter. In 2012, the Ithaca Public Art Commission secured permission from the city to decorate the flat gray electrical boxes situated on sidewalks all over town. They immediately turned to the art community, requesting submissions and winnowing the selection down to twenty-one - the original number budgeted for the project. It was so popular, that the Commission funded a second set of twenty-one boxes in 2014. There is no map - you'll have to go explore and find them. The ones pictured here are near the Commons downtown and are just a taste of the creativity unleashed in this project.
