Grand Lake & Lake Merritt

Although this neighborhood is changing, like much of Oakland, its long history as a vibrant commercial area gives it its own unique character. New and trendy restaurants like Shakewell sit side by side with storied institutions like the Grand Lake Theatre which is nearly a century old. Similarly, the people you’ll find here are a fun and unpredictable mix of newcomers and long-time locals. Lake Merritt, a gem of an urban lake, brings all kinds of daytime activity and is unfailingly photogenic at night.

Founded in 1933, this is the last remaining example of a series of open mic piano bars that were scattered around the city. The singing talent level is extremely variable, but the applause is always warm and polite. Local icon pianist Rod Dibble has played there since 1960, knows 4000 songs by heart and still shows up several times a week. The decor is "haunted house" supplemented by thousands of business cards stapled to the walls.
