Uptown

Not long ago, a renaissance of art, food, beverage and a plethora of eager small businesses began transforming this neighborhood, giving like-minded creatives, chefs, artists and entrepreneurs, a place to hone their craft. The preservation of historic landmarks, a rich history of political activism and an active art scene lends itself to a culture of civic pride bringing diverse activity to the heart of Oakland.

"Abura-ya" means "oil house" in Japanese. Any kind of oil, really, which is fitting, because this is the place to go for delicious fried chicken (or tofu), and it moves from place to place. Catch this pop-up restaurant every workday lunch at The Hatch (402 15th St) and four times a week for dinner down the street at Garden House (380 15th St)....they're also known to pop up occasionally in San Francisco, but not that often. It's really an Oakland thing. Sometimes there are feature performances from 3'O Clock Rock- the punk rock after-school program down the street. By night, Hatch is a cool place to hang out for Oakland beers, comfort food, and events like live music and comedy.
