Darlinghurst
Rough, off-beat and beautiful, Darlinghurst encapsulates urban life in Sydney. This whole-in-the-wall neighbourhood used to house Sydney's most infamous crime gang, the Razors. Today it offers some of the city's best small bars and Italian restaurants. If you're lucky, you can (probably) still grab a piccolo with Australia's version of Tony Soprano.

Go for lunch and get in early. From Wednesday to Saturday, this yakitori restaurant makes just 30 bowls of ramen each day that are knock-out. Cash only. Cosy, atmospheric interiors (we swear we saw them DIY it all!) polishes off an authentically refined Japanese experience. The round table by the window is the best seat.
