Barracks Row & Eastern Market

Barracks Row, a small neighborhood to the southeast of Capitol Hill, has a history as old as the city itself. It was the first commercial area in the District and was built around the Marine Barracks, which it was named after. Within just the past few years there has been a significant restoration movement in Barracks Row, drawing the presence of entrepreneurs, artisans, and small businesses.

Eastern Market was one of the original public food markets in D.C., and it remains a vibrant centerpiece of neighborhood. The open interior houses traditional meat, cheese and produce counters, and the outdoor space is home to a weekly farmer’s market. However, the best time to visit is the weekends, when the outdoor market and surrounding streets transform into a sprawling, bustling craft and flea market.
