Kirkwood
Kirkwood is a national historic designated neighborhood on the east side of Atlanta. It’s situated entirely in DeKalb County, bordered by the neighborhoods of Lake Claire to the north, East Lake to the south, Edgewood to the west, and Oakhurst to the east. Once described as an “area of beautiful suburban villas” with streetcars providing express service to and from Atlanta three times daily, Kirkwood is considered very much a part of Atlanta today. Home to a representative mix of Atlanta’s population, every street has a mix of new residents and those with several generations in Kirkwood. Whether you’re enjoying the tree-lined streets, trying the eclectic mix of restaurants or learning about the history, you’re sure to enjoy your time in Kirkwood.

Kirkwood's 26-acre historic and neglected remains from Atlanta's booming railroad industry have become an ideal gallery for Atlanta’s graffiti artists. The industrial complex’s first buildings were constructed in 1904. It housed the production of weapons for soldiers during the First World War and served as a rail car repair station for Pullman Company until 1954, when it changed ownership several times until the state purchased it in 1992. It is unclear what the future holds for the abandoned rail facility, but for now it serves as an occasional filming location and reminder of Atlanta’s past.
