West End

To the left of both New and Old Town lies Edinburgh's West End. Originally a privately owned property, William Walker bought the estate in 1800 and began developing it into the hub it is now, with the appropriately named William St. and Walker St. running through the heart of it. This area sees residential, commercial, and office spaces all effortlessly co-existing, surrounded by some of the most picturesque architecture in the city. This quiet area has many independent shops and cafés frequented regularly by both locals and visitors alike. Just steps away from the heart of the city, the West End benefits from being close to the centre, while also enjoying a slightly calmer atmosphere. Come for a stroll through the beautiful neighbourhood streets, stay for a delicious meal in a local café, and prepare to be thoroughly charmed by Edinburgh's memorable West End.

With three spires able to be seen from most places in Edinburgh, St. Mary’s Cathedral is hard to miss. It’s the mother church of the Diocese of Edinburgh in the Scottish Episcopal Church and opens its doors every day to parishioners and visitors. St. Mary’s was completed in 1879 thanks to an architectural competition that saw Sir George Gilbert Scott winning with his final design inspired by early Gothic churches and abbeys of Scotland. Be sure to check out the Paolozzi stained glass window, designed by Eduardo Paolozzi which, on a sunny day, transforms the floor below with a prismatic pattern of colours.
