Footscray
Ras Dashen
Picking the best Ethiopian restaurant in Footscray is a futile task. Each of the many Ethiopian venues across town will be somebody’s loyal favourite. For overall points (food, service, love & decor) we’re sticking with Ras Dashen, where everyone is warmly welcomed. It’s the kind of place you proudly/smugly tell your friends and travel websites that you’re a regular and they know your name (we are aware that is exactly what is happening right now). The family-owned and run café in Footscray mall should be experienced with a large group of friends and a cavernous stomach. For roughly $10-a-head you can split a vegan-friendly platter the size of the MCG, consisting of a variety of lentils, vegetables, salad and injera – a spongy, fermented Ethiopian flatbread made just around the corner. Popular beverages include Lipton Ice Tea and the malty nectar that is St George’s beer, imported directly to Footscray. Special mention to the beautiful paintings and tourism posters throughout the room and outstanding selection of tunes. They’ve just opened up a sister café nearby too. Can one overdose on lentils?
