The Fan & VCU

GWAR, Bruce Springsteen, Aimee Mann, and Tom Robbins spent formative years exploring the residential streets, cobblestoned alleys, hidden parks, and river views that make up the swath of land west of the Capital City's downtown presence. As Virginia Commonwealth University has grown, it's become more and more a part of the surrounding Fan District. The two have housed cultural, gastronomical, and creative forces for years, and their mix of genteel style and gritty energy set the resulting neighborhood apart. Nearby, Hollywood Cemetery brings historic star-power to the area by serving as the resting place of US Presidents James Monroe and John Tyler, in addition to offering killer views of Downtown and the James River.

Garnett's feels like it's always been there, situated on a sunny corner in the heart of the Fan. While only a half-dozen years old, it could as well be a perfectly-preserved sixty. Serving modernized takes on classic sandwiches, Croque Garnett, The Cali Club with avocado, or The Chaplain, Turkey, Gouda and Dijon mustard on housemade Boston brown bread. The sides and drinks are just as classic; Sweet Tea or bottled Cheerwine and sides just like your Southern Grandmother made for a social; housemade pickles, black-eyed pea salad or French potato salad. In keeping with the times, Vegetarian & GF options abound, but everyone should save room for the huge cake and pie slices. which sit temptingly along the back counter awaiting their final selection.
