The Fan & VCU

GWAR, Bruce Springsteen, Aimee Mann, and Tom Robbins spent formative years exploring the residential streets, cobblestoned alleys, hidden parks, and river views that make up the swath of land west of the Capital City's downtown presence. As Virginia Commonwealth University has grown, it's become more and more a part of the surrounding Fan District. The two have housed cultural, gastronomical, and creative forces for years, and their mix of genteel style and gritty energy set the resulting neighborhood apart. Nearby, Hollywood Cemetery brings historic star-power to the area by serving as the resting place of US Presidents James Monroe and John Tyler, in addition to offering killer views of Downtown and the James River.

With each new addition to its growing empire, Lamplighter tweaks its recipe—to continued success. The Morris Street location took a monochromatic approach to its mid-campus location, with white subway tile, steel furniture, hanging black lamps, and the star, a matte black La Marzocco espresso machine. Their menu is a little more robust here (more baked goods, different sandwiches), but the coffee is just as much of a priority as it always has been. Get your Lamplighter lattes, drip (always two different roasts), strong cold brew, in addition to fantastic teas and other specialties like the Golden Milk Latte—a turmeric/milk blend. For a deep-VCU location, the coffeeshop is filled with all sorts of creatives, activists, neighbors, journalists, and even politicians. It doesn’t hurt that the massive patio directly next to a shady, green pocket park.
