Barrio Logan

Barrio Logan has long been a colorful bastion for the working-class Mexican and Chicano community in San Diego. Today it still holds strong to these roots, while embracing and also resisting aspects of change. Despite hotly debated questions surrounding gentrification, Barrio Logan is rapidly being recognized for much more than the world-class murals painted on the undercarriage of the Coronado Bridge. Long gone are the days of Barrio Logan being perceived as a strictly Mexican and industrial neighborhood. Barrio now embraces an ethnically diverse group of residents, artists, businesses, and institutions.

Technically sitting in Logan Heights, Bread & Salt is an art enthusiast’s attraction that’s a stones throw away from Barrio Logan. It sits in a beautiful old industrial building, with touches of modern renovations in the parts I’ve seen, including murals decorating parts of the exterior. There is a cluster of people that speak high praise about this gallery / event / studio / artist residency space, but I have yet to witness it in it’s full capacity. Only way to find out what’s going on is on their Facebook page, or through the KPBS and Reader websites.
