Bernal Heights & La Lengua
Bernal Hill
There is no Bernal Heights without our beloved hill. You can see this landmark from all over San Francisco, and once there, the park offers some of the best 360 degree views of the city. Named for the Mexican ranch owner Don Jose Cornelio Bernal (who once owned the original 226 acres), this 26 acre park is thriving thanks to decades of community involvement and volunteer work. Runners and dog walkers enjoy the many trails, as well as the mile paved loop around the base. If you are slightly more adventurous, climb to the top—a popular place to view fireworks when there is no fog (so, never), fly a kite or to watch the sunset. An unofficial rock maze slowly changes as visitors modify the pathways. You may find a citizen-installed rope swing in your exploration, offering what I can assume is a pretty exhilarating ride while viewing the city below. Certainly boasting the best view for any rock in San Francisco, the magical golden rock stands proudly looking down the mountain, and is a good place to take a rest on your trip around the hill.
