District IX is one of the city’s fastest developing areas. The part inside Ferenc körút is a busy zone with the city’s most beautiful Market Hall, cafés, restaurants, and the spectacular Museum of Applied Arts. The area between Ferenc körút and Haller utca attracts tourists with great craft beers and cultural institutions, while the area behind Haller is still mainly industrial (with great architecture, though!).
Built in 1896, the Museum of Applied Arts is the most wonderful example of Hungarian Art Nouveau. Designed by architect Ödön Lechner, it mixes oriental elements with Hungarian folk art decorations and other styles. The Museum organizes regular exhibitions of its collections, but it is also home for some of the biggest contemporary design events in Hungary, including Budapest Design Week.
