Greater Sharpstown encompasses an area of approximately 10 square miles; bounded by the Westpark Tollway to the north, 59 and Bissonnet to the south, Beltway 8 to the west, and Hillcroft to the east. For us, it's pretty much about the rich food scene. Generally speaking, you will find predominantly South Asian establishments near Hillcroft and 59, where a bronze Ghandi monument marks the entrance to the newly established Mahatma Ghandi district. As you head further west through the district you head east on your culinary adventure. Running for miles along Bellaire Boulevard is Chinatown which boasts hundreds of restaurants and shopping malls frequented by people of different ethnicities. We approached the task of documenting this neighborhood with great zeal but were soon daunted by the dizzying array of options. Our list is only the tip of the iceberg, there is simply so much to discover in this thriving international community.
Arts + crafts like crazy!
This bustling barbecue-skewer place is in Diho Plaza. Go for the skewers which have the perfect amount of char and spice. Grilled over charcoal with special authentic northern Chinese BBQ seasoning of cumin, crushed red pepper, garlic and salt they are messy and fun to eat. The lamb is a standout but try a variety of meats, offal and vegetables. Do be generous when ordering, the skewers are delicately portioned, two people can easily go through a couple dozen. Wash them down with cheap domestic and Chinese beer.
