The name 'Brunswik' emerged in 1350 for the first time and is assumed to be older than the City of Kiel itself. 1869 it was suburbanized to Kiel, including the areas Blücherplatz, Düsternbrook and the adjacent district Ravensberg. Today Brunswik is – next to the city center – the most favorite shopping area and houses many cultural, academic or medical facilities as well as several ancient monuments.

The Botanical Garden of Kiel opened its gates to the public in 1985 but is also an academic facility of the Christian-Albrechts-University. In the outside area of 8 ha as well as in seven big greenhouses, it offers a representative cross section of the flora of each continent. The Botanical Garden is ideal for plant lovers or a short vacation from everyday life. Open daily: 9:30am – 6pm
