West LA
If you had a Venn diagram of Santa Monica, Venice, Culver City, Westwood, and Mid-city LA, the overlapping portion right at the center would be West LA. This neighborhood has an ever-increasing list of hip and trendy offerings while continuing to maintain many of the classic establishments that have made it a destination for over half a century. Because of its central location amid so many iconic LA neighborhoods, West LA benefits from the spilling over of influences from its various neighbors without succumbing to the stigma of hype that has engulfed so many desirable areas of Los Angeles.

LA would be a better place if there were a Taco’s Tu Madre on every fifth block. For now, we’re just glad there’s one near us. The feel of this place is somewhere between a restaurant and a food truck. It’s a small, colorful building with a casual walk-up window where you order. They have a small indoor area with some bar stools and a few tables. But the emphasis here is clearly on the food, and it seems their low overhead allows them to innovate. They have more than just your typical Mexican style fare with delightfully unconventional tacos like vegan banh mi and Korean barbecue. You really can’t go wrong. Just please make sure you have the red velvet churros for dessert.
