Carlton

Carlton is famous for its Italian eats, a history deeply rooted in the area from early days. But what makes Carlton a great spot is the combination of new and old, creating an interesting and diverse cultural precinct. Peruse the well-walked Lygon street or veer off and you might just stumble into some interesting spaces otherwise overlooked. With leafy, terrace-lined streets it's a beautiful area to take a morning stroll and admire the Victorian architecture and World Heritage listed sites, with coffee and croissant in hand no less.

Set aside some time to purse Readings bookstore. It began life as a tiny stand-alone shop in 1969 and has since grown into it's current (larger) digs at 309 Lygon. Packed floor to ceiling, you'll surely have no trouble stumbling across something to tickle your fancy. Music, arts, film, recipes, architecture, children's books, travel...It's all here!
