The Dutch often avoid this part of the city, or cycle through it as fast as they can, ringing their bell to warn unobservant tourists that they are about to pass. This area is bustling with tourists. It is the heart of the city and for some tourists, with the red light district and coffee shops, the only neighbourhood to visit in Amsterdam. But there are many good places for more sophisticated people. You just need to know where.

A square in the middle of the historical centre where you can relax in the sun or play a game of soccer. On the square you can find the Amstelkerk, a wooden church built as a temporary placeholder for a larger one to be built. However due to a lack of money, the large church was never built, and the wooden one remained. In this wooden church is a bar/restaurant named 'Nel'with a splendid terrace overlooking the square and the Prinsengracht. On mondays there is a flower market.
