The Dutch often avoid this part of the city, or cycle through it as fast as they can, ringing their bell to warn unobservant tourists that they are about to pass. This area is bustling with tourists. It is the heart of the city and for some tourists, with the red light district and coffee shops, the only neighbourhood to visit in Amsterdam. But there are many good places for more sophisticated people. You just need to know where.

Gebr. Hartering will give you a unique dining experience that is one to remember. The restaurant, owned by two brothers, goes by the table d’hôte menu, where you eat from a set menu, selected that day, ranging from 6-9 courses. The restaurant is small, and at a cosy location by the water. If the weather is in your favour, you can dine on the terrace-boat, which is even smaller and cosier. You may need to pass a plate down to your neighbour, or hold on to your glass of wine as it may tumble over as someone steps off the boat.
