The Dutch often avoid this part of the city, or cycle through it as fast as they can, ringing their bell to warn unobservant tourists that they are about to pass. This area is bustling with tourists. It is the heart of the city and for some tourists, with the red light district and coffee shops, the only neighbourhood to visit in Amsterdam. But there are many good places for more sophisticated people. You just need to know where.

Set on the Oudekerksplein in the Red Light District, an old-fashioned brick building houses Quartier Putain. The funky specialty coffee store, named after Drs P’ s song ‘Quartier Putain’ serves fantastic espresso, drip coffee and various types of tea. The coffee bar is owned by the Dutch hip hop label Top-Notch, which is clear from the second you enter; the place contains ample decorations that refer to Dutch hip hop giants and hot newcomers alike. The first floor is reserved for special performances. The stage hosts numerous (unknown) artists who play music, share literature, present design or films. Come for the coffee, stay for the entertainment.
