Khalifa Al Khalifa
What is it that makes a pavilion special? In some cases its the architecture, in others its the contents that can be enjoyed by visitors. For certain pavilions it's the restaurant or a particular beer or typical drink. Here it's hard to say. The architecture is perfect. The contents too, are highly appropriate (not too many, not too few: it's not that easy to find the right measure). Then the food and drink really are delicious (don't miss the ice cream: the saffron and the date ones are mouth-watering). The website too is really smart and well done. As if all of this weren't enough, the Bahrain pavilion has another trump card. Khalifa Al Khalifa, the pavilion's director. Kindness, availability and congeniality in person. If you don't already know him, it won't take long to understand who he is. It's that gentleman wandering around checking that everything's faultless. Who occasionally offers chocolates or other dainties to visitors relaxing in the coolness among the palm trees. In a world where they would have us believe that we must always be fast and hyperactive, here is a practical demonstration of another possible paradigm. A great lesson: in the end, even in contemporary design, the human factor always wins through.
