The Tensile Structure Over the Decumanus
Fans of architecture will find in this city many places and many big names.Norman Foster, Jacques Herzog and Pierre De Meuron, Daniel Libeskind, Cameron Sinclair, Benedetta Tagliabue, Michele De Lucchi and many others. However, we have something to say. The most beautiful and intelligent work of architecture in the whole of Expo 2015 wasn't made by an architect. Yep, it's true. Here we have to thank an engineer from Bologna called Massimo Majowiecki. He it is who came up with the [tensile structure to cover all of the Decumanus](http://www.abitare.it/en/expo-en/exhibition-expo-en/2015/05/01/expo-canopy-decumanus/). Organizing the entire site around the concept of Cardo and Decumanus (as if we were in a city founded by the ancient Romans) was a great idea. Covering the whole Decumanus with a never-ending tensile structure was a stroke of genius. Apparently (i.e., actually), the tensile structure serves as shelter from the sun and rain. But its true function is something else: thanks to this element, all the pavilions acquire conceptual orderliness, become a city. Without this linking element, we would have an untidy series of pavilions. Some striking, some less so, each of them navel gazing. Instead, in this way, everything takes on a new meaning. Mr Majowiecki, thanks a million! P.S. Have a look at his website. In a world dominated by Parallax and, HTML5 isn't it just delightful?
