St James’s Church, built to a beautiful design by Sir Christopher Wren to mark this new part of London in 1684, manages to be both a sanctuary of calm and the vibrant centre of the community. Their programme of musical concerts is exceptional, and the churchyard a perfect spot for a lunchtime sandwich from Paxton & Whitfield. For history buffs, the church was the baptismal place on many greats including poet and artist William Blake.
